Crete is a destination which is ideal at any time of year, off-season too. Famous for its abundant choice of family resorts, villages and towns that welcome visitors during the summer months — exploring Crete off-season can actually be a rewarding experience.

During my last few days on the island early September, I decided to skip the crowds and explore an area which was new to me. Argyroupolis is a small town located in the north of Rethymnon and is the site of the ancient city of Lapa which was a prominent city during the Roman times.

The town is famous for its natural springs, lush scenery and welcoming residents. The narrow streets of the village lead towards a neighbourhood of old Venetian stone mansions dating back to the 14th and 15th century — this luxury neighbourhood goes by the name of Arcus Luxury Suites.

Arcus Luxury Suites — a Preservable archaeological monument

As you enter the grounds of Arcus Luxury Suites you can immediately feel the presence of the Venetian architecture, from the impressive dome, to the stone arches and cobblestone courtyards that highlight the authentic charm of this property. As Yiannis and Eleni, the lovely owners later explained, back in 2005 when they were in the process of renovating the property the Ministry of Culture declared it as a preservable archaeological monument.

Therefore with respect to the style and architecture of its Venetian predecessors, the collection of 5 independent suites was designed in a way that preserved its original heritage.

Ontas Classic Penthouse Suite

We were accommodated in a loft style guesthouse called the Ontas Classic Penthouse Suite located on the second level. The suite features a spacious terrace which overlooks the garden and the pool where you can enjoy a traditional Cretan homemade breakfast if weather permits.

Autumn is usually sweet and gentle in Greece and September being commonly referred to as the second summer is a great month to enjoy a quality holiday. Since it was still quite hot, I could not resist taking a dip in the pool. The garden and pool area is very inviting — ideal for catching some sun’s rays or just to unwind with a cheerful read.

Breakfast — the Arcus way

Breakfast at Arcus was a specialty on its own.  The guesthouse is a family household run by the Deligiannakis family, and if you meet them you are guaranteed to love them. Yiannis’s mother, Argyro prepares the most delicious pies, she bakes cakes and makes homemade jams. The kitchen is her empire. Together with her husband Kanakis, they make the perfect duo. You know those power couples that we admire.

Two mornings in a row we enjoyed the most delicious breakfast on our private terrace, the ample choice of freshly prepared dishes was the best example of the warm Cretan hospitality. We felt right at home.
