Best Restaurants on Hydra

Kodylenia’s

Kamini

Set on a picturesque waterfront of the area of Kamini, overlooking the Aegean Sea and the traditional fishing boats floating on the blue water, this family run taverna brings together the very best flavours of the Mediterranean.

You can reach here by a traditional boat, high-speed water taxi or on foot (approximately 15 minutes from Hydra port). The taverna operates from March until the end of October.

In a relaxed, dreamy setting shaded by the imposing rocks we enjoyed a fantastic lunch and savored some of the dishes which Dimitris, the owner suggested that we tried.

Everything from homemade taramasalata (Greek fish roe dip), to a mixed greens salad with cheese, nuts and balsamic vinegar sauce, wild greens, stuffed mushrooms, spinach pie, baked aubergines in a fresh tomato sauce, fava dip made out of yellow split peas served with fresh onion, capers and olive oil,  Greek style meatballs served with fresh fries, fantastic shrimp saganaki and the local delicacy, the charred Hydra squid or kalamari in Greek.

In fact the squid is collected by local fisherman and is deep frozen to last for the season until the next batch is available for fishing. Enjoy your meal with a chilled glass of wine or an anise-flavoured famous Greek aperitif ouzo.

Christina

Kamini

This family run taverna is situated inland from the Kamini harbor. Christina’s children now run the family business continuing their mother’s passion for serving the island’s best Greek dishes and fresh fish. The vegetables are freshly grown in their family garden and served at the taverna.

We tried their Greek salad, cabbage and carrot salad, stuffed peppers with cheese and paprika, a velvety beetroot salad which was divine, tirokafteri, fresh fries, fried squid, fresh grilled fish and a Vegetable millefeuille.

Enjoying a freshly prepared Greek lunch with a delightful view of the Kamini harbour.

The restaurant is very cat friendly and you are guaranteed to be greeted by numerous furry friends.

Caprice

Inside the streets of Hydra Town, opposite St. Barbara church

For those who are looking to enjoy a romantic setting, this enchanting Italian trattoria inside the streets of the Hydra Town is a fantastic choice.  Caprice has been serving  authentic Italian recipes with a touch of Greek ingredients since 1994.

The interior of this restaurant is highlighted by authentic nautical paintings, old photographs and tools used by the sponge divers in the past. All tell the family’s history and add up to its authentic charm.

The menu features fresh seafood dishes, a great selection of pasta, salads and Italian pizza made with a thin Italian crust. Enjoy a candlelit dinner or a bottle of fine wine, listening to the soothing melodies, like jazz and swing.

We tried a few dishes like eggplant in the oven with mushrooms, Della Casa salad with a mix of greens and gorgonzola cheese, Spaghetti carbonara and pizza Margarita.

Il Casta

Inside the streets of Hydra Town, further up from the pharmacy

At Il Casta you are guaranteed to experience authentic Cucina Napoletana. The restaurant owners are Italian and bring Italy’s most vibrant recipes to the island of Hydra. Set in a beautiful courtyard inside the Hydra Town, guests will enjoy a relaxed environment with an Italian flair. The restaurant is open for dinner.

The menu serves Seafood and Italian dishes. We tried their Carpaccio di Polpo — octopus carpaccio in a ginger dressing, Impepata di Cozze — steamed mussels with pepper, Casta salad made with arugula, bacon, feta cheese and avocado topped with Modena balsamic vinegar, a refreshing cherry tomato and pasta salad flavoured with nuts and garlic as well as their homemade pasta with a tomato sauce.

To Piato

Hydra Harbor

Located on the waterfront of the Hydra harbor, right next to the Bell Tower this restaurant is known for its impressive decor — hundreds of original plates coloured by the clients which decorate the walls of the restaurant. Among the A-listers who have been here are Pamela Anderson and Kate Moss. In fact the owners will proudly show you the plate which had been painted by Kate Moss’s daughter.

The menu features a selection of Greek appetisers, both cold and warm, salads, grilled meat and fish dishes. We tried the signature Piato salad made with a mixture of lollo rossa, lettuce, rocket, manouri cheese, dried apricots and pumpkin seeds, as well as a mixed grill with a selection of meats.

Prima

Port of Hydra next to the arrivals/departures

Prima is an all day stop for coffee, food and drinks. Centrally located in the heart of Hydra port we had arranged a surprise birthday party for our fellow travel blogger Celeste. The view is fantastic and we enjoyed wine, snacks and birthday cake while watching the sunset.

The place is great for any time of day and for people watching. Chef George did an excellent job with the canapés and cheese and the overall organization of the surprise.

If you are heading to Hydra this summer, we hope that you find this guide to the best restaurants on Hydra useful. Have you been to Hydra?
